The Rising Popularity of Lock Up and Leave Homes

In recent years, one of the biggest shifts in the property industry has been the rising popularity of lock up and leave homes. For baby boomers with an empty nest or with their retirement in the not too far away future, a lock up and leave home is an enticing opportunity to embrace a more active lifestyle.

As the name suggests, these types of homes allow people to “lock up and leave” without having to worry about who is going to mow the lawn or keep the pipes from freezing over.

Weekend getaway? Lock up and leave.
Visiting family? Lock up and leave.
Going travelling? Lock up and leave.
Boarding an exotic cruise ship for a few weeks? Lock up and leave.

Put simply, you can jet off at any time and know that your property is safe and secure.

Indeed, many over 65’s are no longer content with a simple quiet retirement and the growing number of lock up and leave homes is a clear reflection on this shift. According to a study by Experian, the over 65s are spending £1.3bn more on travel compared to ten years ago and take 60% more holidays than the average person who works full time.

Ultimately, lock up and leaves homes offer people freedom and the flexibility to pursue their own interests. With these types of homes typically having a smaller square footage than a large family house, they also require less maintenance and lower upkeep costs, freeing up finances for more interesting activities. And although smaller, lock up and leave homes offer a high standard quality of living.
