We are delighted to announce that our very own Erin Kirkby successfully climbed the hights of Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching the summit on Monday 21st August 2016.
Blueoak Estates were the proud sponsors of Erin’s expedition, climbing nearly 6,000m Kilimanjaro to reach it’s summit. Whilst not akin to climbing Everest or K2, it’s still no mean feat and something to be approached with respect and care.
“Altitude is the key”, says Simon Mtuy, who as well as leading trips up the mountain holds the record for the quickest ascent and descent, managing in eight-and-a-half hours what takes the tourists six days. “Climbers can get headaches, suffer vomiting and struggle with their digestive system and so must walk incredibly slowly to combat the difficult side-effects”.
Erin has been in training for this expedition for over six months and is in great physical fitness to take on the challenge. Before leaving for her expedition, Erin commented “I’m nervous but very excited and can’t wait to reach the summit and take in the views over the crater rim”.
