Blueoak Estates are very proud to be the headline sponsor of the Wilson Trophy 2017. The three-day event will be taking place at West Kirby Marine Lake, directly opposite the new site for The Sail, which is set to be Blueoak Estates’ most luxury development to date.

The Wilson Trophy is the most prestigious team racing event in the world, attracting 200 sailors from across the globe. However, the three-day event is not just exhilarating for the sailors but for the spectators too, who come far and wide to watch thirty teams battle it out for the top spot. Despite being an international world championship event, the Wilson Trophy is free to watch and enjoy.

Each of the participating teams have identical boats, sails and equipment to ensure the playing field (or lake) is level. To ensure their own team comes out in front, sailors have two main weapons. They can position themselves in front of an opponent’s boat which cuts off the wind and slows their opponent down. Alternatively, they can use ‘right of way’ rules to force a boat to alter its course or incur a penalty.

The history of the Wilson Trophy began in 1948 when West Kirby Sailing Club sent a sailing team to Dun Laoghaire in Ireland. To the surprise of all competitors, this little unknown team were runners up in the final. That evening, over a celebratory drink in their hotel room, the West Kirby sailors discussed the possibility of holding a similar racing event back home. Today, 10,000 local, national and international people flock to West Kirby to watch the thrilling spectacle.
